Industrial machines use specific needle systems: DB needles fit single-needle lockstitch machines, and DC needles fit most overlock machines. Home machines such as Singer use domestic needles. Always match the system to your machine.
The number is the thickness: 9–11 for fine fabrics, 12–14 for everyday cottons, and 16–18 for denim, canvas and heavy fabric. Change needles regularly — a dull needle causes skipped stitches and snagging.
