Narrow elastic (1/8" to 1/2") suits cuffs, sleeves, baby clothes and masks. Mid widths (3/4" to 1.25") are the usual choice for skirt and trouser waistbands, and wide or band elastic (1.5" to 2") gives a firm, comfortable waistband on uniforms and sportswear.
Measure the waist and cut the elastic a little shorter so it holds without digging in. Buying a longer roll is more economical if you sew waistbands regularly.
